Madrid’s Seaya closes €300M climate tech fund

The Spanish tech ecosystem continues to thrive, with the combined enterprise value of Spanish startups surpassing €100 billion in 2023. Madrid-based VC fund Seaya is capitalizing on this upward trend by closing a €300 million climate tech fund called Seaya Andromeda. The fund will focus on investing in growth companies that specialize in energy transition, decarbonization, sustainable food value chains, and the circular economy.

Seaya, known for its mission-driven investments in Europe and Latin America, plans to make 25 investments by 2027 from the new climate fund. With a first check ranging from €7 million to €40 million, the fund aims to support companies at various stages of growth. Seaya Andromeda has already made five investments, including companies involved in augmented reality skill training, AI-powered waste management, and data-driven verification of carbon credits.

The fund’s location in Spain provides unique advantages. The country’s proximity to the severe effects of climate change, combined with its expertise in renewable energy and industrial manufacturing, positions Seaya Andromeda to make informed investment decisions. The launch of this climate tech fund adds to the growing funding activity in Spain’s tech ecosystem, which has gained recognition for its strong startup culture and high number of fundings in recent years.

Anthropic funds new AI benchmarks

Anthropic is launching a program to fund the development of new AI benchmarks to evaluate the performance and impact of AI models, including generative models like Claude. The program will provide payments to third-party organizations that can effectively measure advanced capabilities in AI models.

Anthropic aims to elevate the field of AI safety by creating challenging benchmarks focused on AI security and societal implications. They seek tests that assess a model’s ability to carry out cyberattacks, manipulate people, and enhance weapons of mass destruction. The program also supports research into benchmarks that explore AI’s potential in scientific study, language understanding, bias mitigation, and toxicity self-censorship.

Anthropic envisions platforms for subject-matter experts to develop evaluations and large-scale trials involving thousands of users. While the company’s commercial ambitions may raise concerns, they aim to be a catalyst for comprehensive AI evaluation becoming an industry standard.

OpenAI acquires remote collaboration platform

OpenAI is on an acquisition spree, recently purchasing database tech firm Rockset and now acquiring startup Multi (formerly Remotion), which focuses on developing a video-first collaboration platform for enterprises.

Multi’s team, consisting of around five people, is expected to join OpenAI after the deal is finalized. Multi’s CEO, Alexander Embiricos, announced that Multi will cease operations after July 24.

OpenAI’s strategic move towards enterprise solutions has been evident with their recent acquisitions. The company’s revenue is projected to exceed $3.4 billion this year, thanks to the success of their corporate-tier AI-powered chatbot platform, ChatGPT, which is being used by 93% of Fortune 500 companies. OpenAI has also partnered with PwC to resell their tools to other businesses and launched a business-oriented AI model tuning and consulting program.

Considering OpenAI’s focus on corporate products, it’s not far-fetched to imagine an enhanced version of ChatGPT with videoconferencing and remote collaboration capabilities in the future. This could be a response to the increasing time lag between the releases of OpenAI’s flagship models.

SpaceX launches portable Starlink Mini, priced at $599

SpaceX has unveiled the Starlink Mini, a portable version of its satellite internet system that can fit easily into a backpack.

Early adopters of Starlink were given the opportunity to purchase the Starlink Mini kit for $599, a $100 premium over the standard kit. They also had the option to add the Mini Roam service to their existing plan for an additional $30 per month, with a monthly data limit of 50 gigabytes.

SpaceX plans to reduce the price of the kit in the future. Weighing just 2.5 pounds with the kickstand, the Mini antenna is 60% lighter than the standard dish and offers download speeds exceeding 100 Mbps. The first Starlink Minis are expected to be available in July.

This option is particularly attractive to travelers and provides a cost-effective backup internet connection. Currently, Starlink boasts over 3 million customers across 100+ countries.
