SONY’s PS5 Pro game console recently received a “7/Good” rating in IGN’s review

This console is notable for its powerful hardware advantages, significantly improving the performance and picture quality of the game. However, the high price of $700 makes players think twice about whether it’s worth upgrading. The PS5 Pro does not allow all games to automatically “upgrade”, only specially optimized “PS5 Pro Enhanced” games can take full advantage of its performance.

The PS5 Pro is not a new generation console, it still uses the same AMD Zen 5 CPU core as the PS5, supports PS4 and PS2 games, and uses the same DualSense controller. Its appearance has changed somewhat, and it weighs 3 pounds less than the original 2020 model and is slightly smaller. The PS5 Pro adds 2GB of DDR5 RAM, 2TB of storage, and a 62% increase in GPU speed, making it one of the most powerful home consoles available.

In actual use, the PS5 Pro’s performance mode makes the game more lively. For example, in Spider-Man 2, the PS5 Pro outperforms the fidelity mode of the regular PS5 in performance mode, making the game world much richer. In Alan Wake II, the PS5 Pro’s ray tracing feature significantly enhances the game’s visual effects and brings a more realistic experience.

SONY’s new technology, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), boosts image quality and frame rate through AI, rendering images at lower resolutions with little loss of detail. This is similar to Nvidia’s DLSS technology, which allows the game to maintain high quality visuals in performance mode.

The launch of the PS5 Pro demonstrates the importance of mid-season hardware updates. While consoles provide a stable development benchmark, hardware can fall behind other platforms over time. Mid-season updates give consoles a chance to catch up with the latest technology without compromising compatibility or developer interest.

In this light, the PS5 Pro shows its value and explains why SONY priced it at $700. While Nintendo may soon unveil a successor to the Switch, its hardware performance may not match that of the current generation of consoles. Microsoft has no plans for an interim update. As a result, the PS5 Pro occupies a unique position in the current market, offering players an upgrade option worth considering.
